Chief Mkwawa led the Hehe people in fierce resistance against German colonial expansion in the 1890s. The museum at Kalenga, near Iringa, preserves his story and artefacts associated with his leadership.
Exhibits cover pre-colonial Hehe society, the wars of resistance, and Mkwawa's place in modern Tanzanian national memory – including the return of his skull from Germany.
A moving complement to Gangilonga Rock and Iringa Boma on any historical tour of the southern highlands.
