A full day in Tanzania's most accessible wilderness — giraffes on open floodplains, hippo pools at the water's edge, and the dramatic mountain backdrop of the Uluguru, Rubeho, and Lumango ranges.
Mikumi National Park is Tanzania's most accessible safari destination from Dar es Salaam — a sprawling 3,230 sq km wilderness that borders the vast Selous Game Reserve to the south, forming part of one of Africa's largest unbroken ecosystems. Despite its proximity to the coast and ease of access, Mikumi delivers wildlife encounters that rival the celebrated northern circuit parks, without the crowds or the long-haul flight to Arusha.
The park's centrepiece is its open floodplain — the so-called "Little Serengeti" — where giraffe, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, and buffalo roam against a dramatic mountain horizon. Mikumi is also one of Tanzania's best parks for spotting lions in trees, a rare behaviour more commonly associated with Lake Manyara but well established here too. The park's hippo pools are among the most accessible in the country, with large pods visible year-round.
This one-day excursion departs from Dar es Salaam or Morogoro in the early morning, delivers two game drives through the park with a lunch break in between, and returns you to your hotel by early evening — an ideal introduction to Tanzania's southern wilderness.
Your driver-guide collects you from your Dar es Salaam or Morogoro hotel at 5:30am, and the journey west begins as the city wakes around you. A brief coffee stop in Chalinze breaks the drive before the road continues through rolling highland countryside towards the park. The landscape shifts noticeably as you approach Mikumi — the Uluguru, Rubeho, and Lumango mountain ranges rise on three sides, creating a natural amphitheatre that frames the park's open grasslands. You arrive at the park gate by mid-morning, clear fees, and your first game drive begins immediately. The morning light at Mikumi is exceptional, and early hours are prime time for large predator activity — lions, in particular, are often still active and visible on the open floodplain before retreating to shade as temperatures build.
The game drive continues across Mikumi's celebrated open floodplain, where giraffe, elephant, zebra, and buffalo move in loose herds against the mountain backdrop. The floodplain earned the nickname "Little Serengeti" for the sheer density and variety of plains game visible from a single vantage point. A visit to the hippo pools is a highlight of the day — large pods wallow year-round in thick mud, and the pools also attract crocodiles, water birds, and the occasional elephant family. Lunch is taken at a designated park picnic site at around 1pm, a chance to step out of the vehicle and absorb the sounds of the African bush at rest.
After lunch, the afternoon game drive brings renewed activity as the midday heat begins to ease. Mikumi supports healthy populations of eland, impala, kudu, roan antelope, sable antelope, baboon, and wildebeest — all commonly seen during the afternoon hours as animals emerge from shade and head toward water. The park is also one of Tanzania's more reliable locations for tree-climbing lions, a behaviour thought to be an adaptation to the heat and insects at ground level; your guide knows the favourite trees. The drive concludes and you depart the park at 4pm for the return journey. Hotel drop-off in Dar es Salaam or Morogoro completes the day.
This tour departs from and returns to Dar es Salaam or Morogoro. Mikumi is Tanzania's most road-accessible park from the coast — no domestic flight required.
